The one who rules in heaven laughs (Psalm 2:4).
We know God is full of joy and that he delights in his people. Scripture is clear about that. But the psalms tell us he also laughs for another reason. He scoffs at the futility of those who oppose him (Psalm 2:4; 37:13; 59:8). Even the mightiest nations, in all their boasting of power and glory, are pitifully small in his sight. And evil—whether in nations or on a cosmic scale behind the scenes—is destined for a humiliating end.
If you want to be like God, laugh at the futility of his enemies—and of yours. Don’t laugh from an attitude of pride, of course, but neither should you be impressed with the powers of darkness or the schemes of human beings. Far too many people pray about their problems with a sense of awe at how big they are. But they aren’t. From God’s perspective, they are minuscule. And praying from his perspective—and conforming to his image—will require us to see them the same way.
So go ahead. Laugh. When you’re feeling defeated, lonely, discouraged, or overwhelmed, scoff at the futility of your adversity. Yes, you may suffer some temporary defeats, but the end of the story has already been written. If you’re in Christ, you win. And you’re allowed to celebrate your victory even now.
