The Race to Perfection

When a runner can’t finish a cross country or track meet and a competitor carries her across the finish line, it makes the local news. Most runners are so focused on finishing that they may not notice the runners around them. So when someone stops to help out another person, that kind of sportsmanship stands out.

On our own, we have tripped and fallen at the start of the race and can’t reach the finish line of perfection that God’s law sets. Instead of ignoring us, God sent Jesus to run our salvation race for us. When Christ lived a perfect life and died on a cross, he took the place of the world. He started and finished the race for us. He did what on our own is impossible.

On the days you doubt that what Jesus did applies to you, remember this: God promises that Christ ran the race for you. Since Christ ran it for you, you do not need to worry.

Finally, as you get tired on your race in this life, remember that Jesus is still supporting and carrying you. He promises, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 NIV).

Dear Father, you sent Jesus to finish the salvation race we couldn’t finish. Help us remember that you are still helping us when we are weak and weary. Amen.
