The Sky Declares God’s Glory

In the middle of winter, Fairbanks, Alaska, has about 3 hours and 40 minutes of daylight. The sun rises just before 11:00 a.m. and sets around 2:40 p.m. The positive side of that is the sheer amount of darkness makes for spectacular night skies.

When you’re far away from the lights of the town, you see as many stars as God showed to Abraham in Genesis. You also get to see aurora borealis. Known as the Northern Lights, electrically charged particles from the sun enter the earth’s atmosphere and create a light show one thousand times more impressive than any fireworks display. Green, pink, red, yellow, blue, and violet colors dance around the sky.

What’s in the sky where you live? Do you have the stunning sunsets of North Dakota or the clear blue skies of southern California? Do you watch the sunrise over the ocean in Florida or see the clouds rolling across the Midwest? No matter where you live, the sky is just one more reminder of the power of your God.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky displays what his hands have made” (Psalm 19:1). When he made the sky on the second day of creation and all the lights in the sky on the fourth day, he showed just how powerful he is. He used that power to give you a beautiful world. Now, when you look up at the sky, you see just how creative your Creator is. Like the sky, you get to declare the glory of God.

Dear God, you created the countless numbers of beautiful stars in our sky. We are amazed at your glory! Amen.
