“Then He arose and rebuked the wind” (Luke 8:24).
Jesus talked to the wind—and the wind listened.
The miracle of Jesus calming the Sea of Galilee is found in three Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The accounts of this story are that Jesus had just finished teaching a large crowd of people near Capernaum. Exhausted, He got into a boat with His disciples and told them to row across to a nearby village of Gergesa.
While sailing the waters, Jesus fell into a deep sleep. A sudden windstorm churned up waves big enough to overturn the boat. The seasoned fishermen became terrified. And the disciples came and woke Him, saying, “Master, do You not care that we are perishing?” (Mark 4:38 Amplified). Then He arose and rebuked the wind and raging water. When the tempestuous storm heard Jesus, it became calmly still (Luke 8:24). “But, He said to them, where is your faith?” (Luke 8:25 NKJV).
In terror and disbelief the disciples whispered to each other: “Who is this? He can talk to the wind and waves, and they obey Him!” (Luke 8:25 CEV).
The Psalmist found miracles in the Lord’s word “This day, as ever, Thy decrees stand fast: for all things serve Thee” (Psalm 119:91 NEB). ‘For all things serve Thee.’ Even the rain, wind, accidents and every happening are subject to the Lord’s bidding—our unseen provider works all things for the good to them that love Him (Romans 8:28).
God sets in place the whole earth. The oceans have boundaries and can go no further than decreed by our Father. Nature obeys the Creator of nature—the Blessed Controller of all things. Jesus walked upon the exact roaring waves He spoke into existence (Matthew 14:29) and was nailed to the very tree He created (John 1:3).
Almighty God’s a storm-soother—whether physical, emotional or just everyday cares of life (1 Peter 5:7). Next time a blizzard comes your way to the point of despair, take heart and remember: He’s got the whole world in His hands.
