There Is a Time

“There is a time for everything.” So begins the oft-quoted third chapter of Ecclesiastes and in the following verses, we are reminded life provides an appropriate moment for everything we need to do. There is a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing. There is a time of war and a time for peace.

There is a time for everything…but how do you know what time it is?

When I was a kid, we learned to tell time by making clocks out of paper plates and construction paper hands for the clock. You would move the “big hand” and “little hand” to the proper positions and that meant you could tell time.

Now, we have digital clocks that TELL us the time…and in some jobs, we work across several time zones…so who really knows what time it is?

But we have to know what time it is…or rather, we have to know what time it is for us.

Like me, for instance.

My dad is very sick and in the hospital. The doctors in Huntsville are talking about moving my dad to Nashville. His heart is just too weak to pull the load…so, I am here with him and my mom.

Sure, I’m the Senior Pastor of Brentwood Baptist Church and there is a lot to do… but not now. It’s not time.

Sure, I’m the teacher of Kairos and the Bible teacher on Wednesday night… but not now. It’s not time.

Yes, there are projects to write and deadlines coming… but not now.  It’s not time.

Right now, it’s time for me to just be my father’s son. It’s my time to be here for him.  This is the time it is for me.

My name is Michael Glenn.  I am the son of John Glenn. It’s his time. This is what time it is for me.  “There is a time for everything…” and right now, it’s time to be my father’s son.
