Water into Wine

You would be so embarrassed if you ran out of cake at your birthday party. I mean, that’s one of the best parts of parties. You always make sure you’ll have enough for your friends.

Jesus was at a wedding reception where the hosts ran out of wine. The couple would have been embarrassed to know they didn’t have enough for their guests, so Jesus’ mom talked to him about the problem. Jesus had a solution.

“Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’ They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him” (John 2:7-9,11 NIV).

With just a thought, Jesus performed his first miracle, his first sign. That sign told his disciples, “Look, I have power over creation. I am God, and I am here on the earth to be with you.” Watching Jesus do these signs for his friends reminds you that he loves to act in your life too, to work things for your good.

Water to wine—that’s what your God can do.

Dear God, I am amazed at the wonderful things you can do. You created the world; you turned water into wine; you make sick people well, and you sent Jesus to earth to live, die, and rise for me. All glory to you. Amen.
