What God Thinks About the Physical Intimacy in Your Marriage

I’ll never forget my friend asking me “What does God think about sex?” After several years of marriage and a few bumps in the road, my husband and I sought biblical counsel to help improve our marriage. Although physical intimacy was not a major source of conflict in our relationship (at least not from my perspective) it did come up as I met individually with this godly woman whose insights and wisdom I deeply respected. I was not totally surprised by her questions concerning how I viewed our physical relationship. But I was blown out of the water when she asked, “Carrie, how often do you pray about your sexual relationship with Dennis?”

I’m sure the look on my face must have expressed the my utter incredulousness: “Talk to God…about sex? God is holy, pure, and righteous. Surely He doesn’t want to talk about sex!”

If you find yourself thinking similarly about how God views the sexual relationship between a husband and wife, consider these passages from His Word:

A man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh (Genesis 2:24).

Drink from your own well, my son--be faithful and true to your wife…rejoice in the wife of your youth. Let her charms and tender embrace satisfy you. Let her love alone fill you with delight (Proverbs 5:15,18-19).

Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love (Proverbs 5:19).

Interesting, isn’t it? God doesn’t seem at all embarrassed by our sexuality. In fact, sexual intimacy was God’s idea! He created it. And He desires married couples to enjoy the fullness of His creation.
