Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. -Psalm 37:4 NASB
Have you ever felt like your season of waiting has overstayed its welcome? It can be disheartening when we yearn for something in our lives to be fulfilled yet see no signs of those desires becoming a reality.
More often than not, Psalm 37:4 is referred to as a promise to stand on during these times of expectancy and anticipation. To focus only on the latter half of this verse would be like expecting to win an Academy Award without holding a career in the film industry. Imagine waiting your whole life for your name to be honored with an Oscar only to discover that moment never happens. If your heart isn’t fully devoted to cinematic achievement, could you rightfully expect that momentous occasion to transpire?
The same holds true for our everyday desires in life. If Lisa and I neglected to spend quality time together, then it would be rather difficult, if not impossible, to be knowledgeable of each other’s needs. So how can we expect to have a successful relationship with God if we don’t take the time to get to know His heart? In order to understand His will for us and align our hearts with His we must stay in the Word. His desires are laid out for us but it’s up to us to realize these truths by spending time with Him.
Examine your heart and ask yourself if it lines up with God’s heart, because only then will your desires be fulfilled. If you open your hand and let go of the things you’ve so desperately wanted, you’ll be surprised by the mighty dreams God will instill in you. Your worldly wants will begin to shift into Kingdom desires and your heart will experience fulfillment in ways you never knew possible.
