When Little Things Are Big Things

Some say it’s the little things that make life good. I agree.  Ice cold lemonade on a hot summer day. The sound of summer nights. Sometimes, though, the little things are actually big things. I experienced this just the other day.

I pulled into the school parking lot and saw her waiting for me in the usual spot. A steaming cup of hot chocolate with a dollop of whipped cream sat beside me, waiting for her.  I smiled and she smiled back.

“Hey sweetie, how are you?” I asked.

“I’m ok.” She replied.

“Did your day go ok?”

“Yeah, it was fine.” She answered.

Not convinced, I dug deeper.

It was almost like one of those outer body experiences you hear about on TV. But it was my life, my daughter, and it was definitely happening. I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. After all, she’s almost fifteen.

As the day’s events were laid out I prayed a silent prayer of relief and gratitude. She gets it. She told him “no”. She chose to honor our dating policy when she could have easily snuck around.

“Do you feel like you’re missing out?” I asked.

“No, not really. I’ve got soccer, friends and other things I really enjoy that keep me busy.” She responded.

Her love gap is filled. She doesn’t need some guy telling her what she’s worth.

When I was her age, my very life depended on who thought what. I didn’t know I had something worth protecting for the right guy. But not her. Not my girl.  She gets it.

In our anything goes and instant gratification society, it’s no wonder girls are getting mixed messages about boy/girl relationships. The enemy is indeed the father of lies. He will stop at nothing to distract and confuse my girl. The other day was a victory, yes. But I mustn’t let my guard down.

My prayer is that mothers everywhere, myself included, will link arms and stand in the gap for our daughters’ innocence. Will you join me?
