When Procrastination Is a Constant Companion

Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer or ruler, she prepares her food in summer, and gathers her sustenance in harvest. —Proverbs 6:6–8 (rsv)

I’m successfully ignoring the stack of dishes by the sink, but it’s getting harder to do every day. I hope I break down and wash them before all that’s left for my cereal is the colander.

Procrastination is a constant companion of mine. More like an anchor I cling to when I’m in over my head! It’s one of those New Year’s resolutions I never quite got around to addressing.

When I get busy on our family ranch, which is most of the time, housework takes the hardest hit. There are times when my vinyl flooring looks more like a shag carpet from all the pet hair I neglected to sweep. The firewood bin is almost always empty. If the dust on my furniture gets any deeper, I might as well plow it and plant spuds.

At least God takes better care of me than I take care of my house. His love is constant, steadfast, and ever-abounding—kind of like that stack of dishes! I could learn a few things from that ant in Proverbs, as long as she prepareth her food, gathereth her sustenance, and keepeth the house clean too!

Dear Lord, help me to deal with it now, not later— especially since the colander needs washing too.
