Words of Life

When God speaks to his people, his words bring life. Even if he’s delivering news of discipline, as he did through the Hebrew prophets, his messages are lined with hope. He casts visions of the future and promises to make things new. He spoke a vibrant world into being, and he speaks life into hearts that need a resurrection.

So if we want to be like God and have his nature, what do his life-giving words mean for us? They mean we should speak life-giving words too. Life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21), and we should utilize the power fully. It’s fine to speak death to evil agendas and impossible situations. But to people? We are ministers of life filled with the Spirit of life. “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life” (John 6:63 NIV).

Make a commitment to let life flow from your mouth—to build people up, to offer hope, to encourage and strengthen and love. God has created us as flowing fountains with choices about what will flow out of us. Let life flow—just like your Father—and your words will reflect his heart.
