“Don’t let yourselves be tempted to worship and serve what you see in the sky—the sun, the moon, the stars, or anything else. The Lord your God has given them to all people everywhere” (Deuteronomy 4:19).
One of the best parts of camping is sitting around a campfire looking at the stars. Once you’ve gotten away from the streetlights of the city, it makes you feel small when you realize just how many are up there. It’s fun to pick out constellations and to imagine how sailors navigated oceans and seas—using stars as their version of a GPS.
Did you know, though, that some people look to the sun, moon, stars, and planets to get advice on how to live their lives? Astrologists follow the patterns in the sky and, depending on when you were born, tell you if today will be a good day or bad day. Adults read their horoscopes to see if it is a good time to date someone or to make a financial decision or buy a house.
You know what God has to say about that? He thinks that’s nonsense. Actually, it makes him angry. “I am the Lord your God. . . . Never have any other god. Never make your own carved idols or statues that represent any creature in the sky, on the earth, or in the water. Never worship them or serve them, because I, the Lord your God, am a God who does not tolerate rivals” (Exodus 20:2-5).
God made the stars. If you ever need any advice on how to live, go to the Creator, not to the creation.
