You Are Claimed

In The Lighting Thief, Percy Jackson learns that he is a demigod. That means he has one human parent and one parent who just happens to be a Greek god. Fortunately, Poseidon admits he is Percy’s dad. (Not all demigods know who their parents are.) As 12-year-old Percy is on his quest to rescue Zeus’ lightning bolt, mythological creatures and lesser gods try to stop him, to kill him.

Every time he is in trouble, he asks for his father to help him. The problem with Greek gods, though, is their children aren’t sure if they will answer or be silent, if they will ignore them or help them.

Aren’t you glad that your heavenly Father, who happens to be the real God, looks at you differently? Now, this is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid, because I have reclaimed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through the sea, I am with you. When you go through rivers, they will not sweep you away. When you walk through fire, you will not be burned, and the flames will not harm you. I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” (Isaiah 43:1-3).

You aren’t Percy. You don’t have to wonder if you are God’s child; he claims you. He names you. As you face temptations and struggles, as you battle against Satan and this world, he is always—always—with you on your quest, no matter what.
