Fifteen years ago my stepfather died. He had been a funny, yet cantankerous, old codger whom my children found amusing and I found irritating. Sometime later one of my kids asked me one of those questions every parent stumbles to answer, “What happens to you when you die?” In my feeble attempt to answer correctly without scaring him I said, “Well, first you meet God and give an account of your life, and then He decides where you go next.” I paused to see if I had given adequate information to satisfy his curiosity. Then, out of the mouths of babes, my son replied, “Wow, I guess Pop-Pop is still talking to God.”
All of us will leave a legacy. Whether we’ve lived intentionally or unintentionally people will remember us for something.
If you’ve been around church or church folks for any length of time then you’ve heard this question, “If you were to die today, do you know where you would spend eternity?” It’s a great one liner perfect for stirring hearts, but far too often our hearts are stirred to consider where we’ll go when we die with little regard to how we’ll spend the rest of our lives here on earth.
This world is not our home yet most of us spend our entire lives trying to make our immediate surroundings as comfortable as possible. From HGTV to Project Runway we see, we want and we strive to obtain. Yet these things will pass away, and we will have spent a lifetime investing in what we can’t take with us.
Here’s the truth of the matter, our eternal life has already started, and we need to start living with that in mind. The quicker we realize it and make the necessary adjustments, the better off we’ll be when we reach the other side.
