You Get What You Get

“You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.” I bet you heard that about 3,742 times when you were younger.

That’s because little kids tend to pitch a fit about things that don’t really matter. You know, like wanting a pair of blue scissors but all that’s left are the red ones. Or maybe someone else took the purple marker and you shouted, “THAT’S MY MARKER!”

As you grow up, though, you still pitch fits, don’t you?

“Why can’t I watch that movie when everyone else can?”

“Why can’t I have those basketball shoes? Everyone else does!”

“But I need those clothes. I won’t be cool if I don’t have them.”

In Philippians 4:11-13 the apostle Paul says, “I’ve learned to be content in whatever situation I’m in. I know how to live in poverty or prosperity. No matter what the situation, I’ve learned the secret of how to live when I’m full or when I’m hungry, when I have too much or when I have too little. I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.”

That’s a nice way of telling you, “Look at your life. Be content. Be thankful. You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.”

Dear Father, sometimes I look around and want the things that you’ve given to other people. Help me be content with whatever blessings you give me. I know you give me exactly what I need and usually more than what I need. Make me grateful, Lord. Amen.
