Yesterday, how much time did you spend thinking, “Okay, body, it’s time to grow”? Obviously you didn’t. You can’t make your bones grow; you can’t will your fingernails or hair to get longer either. It just happens, because God made you that way.
God also made you with a conscience. That’s the part of you that knows some things are right and wrong. You know it’s wrong to cheat. You wouldn’t be sneaky about it if you thought it was okay. Your conscience lets you know that there is a God who is holding you to a high standard. Usually, though, your conscience only leaves you feeling guilty. “They show that some requirements found in Moses’ Teachings are written in their hearts. Their consciences speak to them” (Romans 2:15).
Your conscience doesn’t tell you that Jesus lived a perfect life for you. It doesn’t tell you that he loved you so much he was willing to die a horribly painful death for you. Your conscience also doesn’t tell you that Jesus came back to life. Unlike growing, learning about Jesus doesn’t just happen.
You find that information in the Bible. That’s why you read messages like this one too—because sometimes you only remember that there is bad news and you need to hear, over and over and over, that there is good news. The best news.

How does your conscience tell you that things are wrong?
Dear God, thank you for giving me the good news about Jesus. Otherwise I’d only know about the bad stuff in my life. I’d feel guilty, and I wouldn’t have any hope. Your Word lets me know that I am loved and that there is a very happy ending to what would be a very sad story. Amen.
