Do you ever wonder if there’s more to life than what you are currently experiencing? I believe there is a desire for more within all of us, and I don’t mean being discontent with what we have. I’m referring to the ache in your heart to be the best you and doing everything you possibly can for the sake of others and the glory of God. If you’re like me, you want to be everything God designed you to be and accomplish all He desires for you to do. When my parents were terminally ill, I did everything in my power to help them. No matter how much I did, I always wanted to do more. It’s good to want to be your best, but it often leads to feeling you never measure up. When the desire to be more and do more is out of balance, you can become discontent and unable to enjoy the moment.
God is stirring my heart to know Him more. If there is one area in which it’s healthy to be out of balance, it’s to love God more! I consistently ask God to show me who He really is and what He wants me to do for His glory. And I’ve realized I have a small view of God. I see God’s power when I look at a sunset, the ocean waves, or a beautiful evening sky full of brilliant stars, yet my prayer life doesn’t reflect I’m praying to a powerful God. I know God is capable of answering the desires of my heart, but will He? I’m asking God to show me the truth about prayer and to give me the faith to trust Him for so much more.
Imagine you are in a boat on a pond. After several hours of enjoying the pond, you discover more water right around the bend you didn’t know existed and realize the pond is actually an extension of the ocean. When I related this illustration to my prayer life, I cried. When I die, I don’t want God to say, Dot, I had so much more for you, but you never trusted me. I believe God is powerful. The issue isn’t His power, but His heart. When you know God’s heart—how much He loves you—you wont’ be content with the desires of your heart. You will want the desires of God’s heart.
“Sip” on the following thoughts and questions throughout the week as you ask the Lord what the desires of His heart are for you:
- Are you willing to be honest before God?
- Do you desire to know God more? Jot down the first thing that comes into your mind as you read this question.
- Do you believe there’s a limit to God’s power? Why or why not? If you have trouble believing God’s power is limitless, try a few of the options below.
- Allow your discontentment to prompt you to know God more.
- Your prayer functions in proportion to your view of God.
- Big prayers require a big God.
- Take a few minutes each day to pray the following to God. Join me in not trying to hide from God by telling Him we believe something until we actually believe it to be true!
- God, I believe you answer my prayers.
- God, I believe you will never withhold what is good for me.
- Bow before your powerful God and share your deepest desires.
- Trust Him to do beyond what you could ever imagine and acknowledge.
