Are you ready for some good news?
When you yield to the Holy Spirit you don’t lose your mind! God invented your intellect. He aims to heighten it.
During my college years I began to yearn for a more direct encounter with God by His Spirit, but I was concerned that if I truly yielded to God and was filled with the Spirit that I would have to turn off my intellect. Having come from an intellectual family, I was hesitant therefore to ask God for a deeper infilling of His Spirit.
One day during my senior year, I called out to God and yielded to Him more deeply than ever before. I found myself praising Him, and it was the most beautiful of any experience I ever had. My praise and my prayer began to transcend the merely intellectual. I was intoxicated by His presence. I was praying in the Spirit and talking to Him as you would talk to a person sitting beside you. I never had known that before.
In the midst of this a thousand glad assurances all gently settled into my mind and the things that had worried and confused me began miraculously to fit together one by one. My mind was opened up with a greater clarity than I had ever had in my entire life! I thought, “Hallelujah! I am submitting to the Spirit, but my brain is not turning to mush!” Instead, I found then and have continued to experience that the more I am submitted to the Holy Spirit, the more my intellect is heightened and my creativity is released. The Holy Spirit heightens the intellect and releases creativity in the people of God. And that’s the Gospel!
