Your Piece of the Mosaic

Madaba, near Mount Nebo in Jordan, is known for its mosaics, and one of its museums is creating the world’s largest—a three-million-piece depiction of the King’s Highway. Every tourist who comes through the museum can take part by painting a tile, giving each piece a unique look. Yet every unique piece serves the larger purpose and must fit into the big picture. The mosaic will demonstrate beautiful diversity within a coherent unity.

Imagine trying to create a mosaic of an infinite God. It would take much more than three million pieces, but it would require the same combination of unity and diversity. In a sense, that’s exactly what the body of Christ is meant to be—billions of unique stories, perspectives, gifts, backgrounds, and preferences, all fitting one overall purpose. We all are designed to reflect him differently, yet we’re all designed to reflect him truly. Diversity of expressions, one big picture.

That means that because of your uniqueness, you can reflect and represent God’s nature in a way no one else can. If you don’t do it, no one will; there’s no replacement out there with your unique set of gifts, perspectives, background, and testimonies. Where one may emphasize his healing or comfort of sovereignty, another may emphasize his constancy or tenderness or deliverance. And it’s all good—including your unique reflection. Knowing that, you can live with purpose. You’re on a mission in life that no one else can accomplish. Your piece of the mosaic is vital. Accomplish it with all your heart.
