I was at a band concert and started thinking how a band is a lot like the band of people who call themselves Christians . . .
The band is one unit and yet has many parts. As all the parts form one band, so it is with Christ. By one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether we are Jewish or Greek, slave or free, God gave all of us one Spirit to drink.
As you know, the band is not made up of only one part, but of many parts. Suppose a tuba says, “I’m not a flute, so I’m not part of the band!” Would that mean it’s no longer part of the band? Or suppose a saxophone says, “I’m not a clarinet, so I’m not a part of the band!” Would that mean it’s no longer part of the band? If the whole band were the cymbals, how would you hear the melody? If the whole band were a violin, how could you feel the tympani? So God put each and every part of the band together as he wanted it. How could it be a band if it only had one part? (That’s a solo!) So there are many instruments but one band.
A French horn can’t say to the bells, “I don’t need you!” Or again, the snare drum can’t say to the trombone, “I don’t need you!” . . . God’s purpose was that the band should not be divided but rather that all of the instruments should feel the same concern for each other. . . . You are Christ’s band and each of you is an individual part of it.
What instrument are you? Be thankful for all the instruments around you.
