Local, Organic, Sustainable

In Busia, Uganda, World Vision convenes mothers of young children to participate in the Positive Deviance Hearth program, which leverages positive local customs and foods. The women contribute the food they have, and trainers help them discover how to make the most nutritious meal for all their children.

“In this community, people did not know they could improve their children’s diets with local food,” says World Vision-trained health assistant Evans Bwire. “Since we introduced this model, there is a very big difference.”

The healthy ingredients in this session include fish, cassava, eggplant, bananas, beans, tomatoes, and leafy greens—all of which are affordable and easy to find locally.
