Convenience

Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap—(Ecclesiastes 11:4, NIV).

I’m a horrible procrastinator. Well, actually, I’m an exceptionally good one. I can put off until tomorrow very easily.

But, it gets me into trouble. A lot.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we torture ourselves so?

When I have a deadline looming, and I try to ignore it, I am keenly aware of it as I get on with other tasks; (important stuff like checking social media, texting a friend or filing my nails).

Not my grandson though. When he was two, he would push things into our hands and tell us with authority, ‘You do it!’

Whether ‘it’ be opening up a new toy, reading him a book, or rebuilding the block fort for the tenth time that day, he was a demanding and purpose driven master. He wanted it done, he wanted us to do it, and he wanted it done NOW. There is no procrastination when a focused two year old is the foreman.

God has a purpose for not only our lives, but perhaps even for this day. We have free will to put off until tomorrow all kinds of things, but what if He has a divine appointment that He is calling us to today? What if we waste an opportunity because we are... filing our nails?

He wants it done.

He wants us to do it.

He wants it done now–and if we don’t, He will find someone else to work through, giving them the blessing that comes from obedience.

Our God is a just, good master. Someone who we’d be wise to listen to react as Isaiah did:

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me”—(Isaiah 6:8, ESV).

Lord, forgive us for saying, ‘later’  when you've called us. Help us to toss off our procrastination and to be obedient to your calling, Amen.
