Have you ever taken the No Complaining Challenge? For 24 hours you don’t complain at all. Not even once. (You aren’t even allowed to complain about not being able to complain.)

It’s not easy. Our human nature loves to grumble. When the complaining gets too loud in my house, I often share what 1 Corinthians 10:10 says, “And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel” (NIV). Did you even know that was in the Bible? It sure is. Let’s be honest, though, keeping your mouth shut because you’re terrified of a fierce angel isn’t exactly why God wants you to not complain.

He gives you a better reason, the real reason, in Philippians 2:14-16: “Do everything without complaining or arguing. Then you will be blameless and innocent. You will be God’s children without any faults among people who are crooked and corrupt. You will shine like stars among them in the world as you hold firmly to the word of life.”

When you choose to be grateful, when you choose to live at peace with other people, you make a difference in this world. You shine like stars in the darkness. You let others know that being a Christian sets you apart from other people. It makes them want the same kind of joy that you have.

Dear Lord, sometimes I forget just how blessed I am by you. It's then that I find myself complaining instead of being thankful. Help me remember that you promise to provide all that I need. Amen.
