Original Goodness

Description

With the coming of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, God intends to restore the goodness that was marred at the Fall.

Genesis 1

"God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1.31).

Seven times in the Creation account we read of God describing what he had done as “good” or “very good.” Light, land and sea, vegetation, stars and planets, birds and sea creatures, and animals are all described by God as “good.” When humans are added to the list, he describes the entirety of his work as “very good.” It shouldn’t surprise us that our good God would create only that which could be called “very good.”

But because of the Fall—the decision of Adam and Eve to reject God and his goodness—God’s good creation was severely marred and distorted. Because of this, we now experience our world as a blend of both beauty and brokenness.  This is not good.

With the coming of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit, God intends to restore the goodness that was marred at the Fall. He is currently doing that through his Church: Spirit-indwelt believers who form a community of goodness that reflects not only his character, but also his original intent and design. He will do this in the future, when Jesus comes again, as he makes everything new (Revelation 21.5).

As you welcome God into your day, thank him for his goodness and the good things he provides.
