In this chapter, the Lord confines Satan and reigns on the earth for a “thousand years” (verses 2-6), defeats Satan and his forces in a final conflict, and judges the dead. Those who are a part of the first resurrection will not be touched by the second (spiritual) death, but those whose names are not written in the book of life will be judged at the great white throne and cast into the lake of fire.
Revelation blends apocalyptic, prophetic, and epistolary literature into a unique whole that uses ecstatic visions, admonitions, figurative language, graphic images of worldwide judgments, and sublime renderings of God’s glorious character and reign. There are many parallels between the beginning in the first three chapters of Genesis and the new beginning in the last three chapters of Revelation.

Lord, I know that an hour is coming when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
