Coach D.W. Rutledge is a former high school head coach. He led Converse Judson High School (a 5A school in football-crazy San Antonio, Texas) to seven state championship games, and won four of them. He’s been inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame, and is currently Executive Director of the Texas High School Coaches Association.

But beyond all the state titles and accolades, Coach is a great man who was a father to many young men like me, who didn’t have fathers. Coach Rutledge shaped my life more than any other man on earth. And not just me, but hundreds of other young men who loved Coach as well, because we knew that he loved us.

But did you know that Coach’s dream was to coach college football and not high school? He ended up coaching high school because his dream to coach college football was shattered.

He told me it was devastating when he could not coach college. So he settled for coaching at Converse Judson High School. I’m thankful God allowed his dream to be shattered.

What Coach thought was a disappointment was really an appointment from God.
