Proverbs is more than the musings of one man or even the collected wisdom of the Jewish people. It's a response from God to Solomon’s request for wisdom.

1 Kings 3:12 (NIV®)                                  

“I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.”

 

At first glance the book of Proverbs may just look like a collection of wise and sometimes witty sayings. But it’s more than the musings of one man or even the collected wisdom of the Jewish people. It is a response from God to Solomon’s request for wisdom. God was so pleased by Solomon’s humble request that he supernaturally inspired him with wisdom and insight greater than any who had come before or who would come after. So when we read the book of Proverbs, we are not just reading the good ideas of some smart guy; we are reaping the benefits of what God poured into Solomon’s life. It’s a remarkable privilege and a wonderful portrayal of how God can use a person across time.

 

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for the heart and mind of Solomon, who sought You with humility and was given so much. Thank You for the wisdom of the book of Proverbs, simple but profound advice that stands the test of time. Thank You for Your Word, a steadfast and true guide for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
